15th Anniversary Event - DC - Saturday Library of Congress

If you have never had the opportunity to visit the Library of Congress, this is a magnificent DC venue you do not want to miss.

There is no fee to tour the Library of Congress, but you must register so tickets can be obtained for admission.

After our Meet and Greet, we will walk together (approximately 3 blocks) from the Capitol Hill Hotel to the Thomas Jefferson Building.  If you do not make the meet and greet but have registered, we will meet you at the Library of Congress by 11 am.  Once we enter, we'll go through "airport-like security" before we commence our self-guided walking tour. There is a free coat check room. You will be astounded by the magnificent frescoes that surround you throughout the library.  Navigating the entire Library of Congress takes between 60 to 90 minutes and requires a half mile of walking. The Library is currently not offering guided tours for groups, however roaming volunteers are available throughout the Thomas Jefferson Building to answer questions, give directions, and share stories about the Library’s collections and building. 

FACTS ABOUT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS:  The Library of Congress sits at the epicenter of our Nation's Capitol.  It is across the street from the US Capitol and next door to the US Supreme Court.   It is the largest library in the world. The Library is the main research source of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office. The Library was founded in 1800, and it is the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation. The original library was housed in the Capitol building which was burned down by British troops on August 24, 1814,  and destroyed the Library's core collection of 3,000 volumes. On January 30, 1815, Congress approved the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library of 6,487 books for $23,950 to begin to rebuild the library. Now the library adds approximately 10,000 items to its various collections each day.
