The book chronicles the life of Johanna (née Bonger) Van Gogh, who married the painter Vincent's brother Theo, and whose story emerges in a parallel narrative. After moving to Paris with Theo, Johanna encounters the erratic Vincent. Theo explained to her how “Sunflowers mean gratitude to Vincent.
Author Marta Molnar shares with us “Johanna Bonger was a real person. She was married to Theo van Gogh, Vincent's brother. In the novel, I tried to stay as close to Johanna's real story as possible. I pieced together her life from her diary and from letters between Vincent and Theo.”
